THE IMPORTANCE OF MILK TEETH IN CHILDREN – Building a Strong Foundation for Lifelong Oral Health

Pediatric dentistry (Pedodontics) focuses on diagnosing and treating dental issues in children — right from infancy through teenage years. Good oral care early in life prevents cavities and gum disease, reduces pain, and supports proper nutrition, speech development, and overall health.

Oral Hygiene Habits for Children

  • Start Early: Clean infant gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeding, even before teeth erupt.

  • Brush Twice Daily: Use a smear or pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Brush for 2 minutes in circular motions. Encourage spitting instead of rinsing to retain fluoride. Parents should assist brushing until proper hand coordination develops.

  • Floss Daily: Helps remove food trapped between teeth and prevents decay.

  • Replace Toothbrush: Every 2–3 months or sooner if bristles are frayed.

Diet & Nutrition for Strong Teeth

  • Limit Sugary Foods & Drinks: Sweets, candies, sodas, and juices can cause cavities.

  • Choose Healthy Drinks: Water and plain milk are the best. Avoid juices in bottles or sippy cups at bedtime — sugars linger on teeth overnight.

  • Healthy Snacks: Fruits and vegetables help reduce harmful acids in the mouth.

  • Balanced Diet: Calcium- and vitamin-rich foods support healthy teeth and bones.

When Should a Child’s First Dental Visit Be?

  • Within 6 months of the first tooth erupting or by their 1st birthday.
  • Dental check-ups every 6 months help detect problems early.
  • Baby teeth are essential for eating, speaking and holding space for permanent teeth as jaws grow.
  • Complete eruption of baby teeth occurs between 6 months to 3 years — totaling 20 teeth.

Nursing Bottle Caries

A severe form of early childhood tooth decay — often seen in toddlers who frequently sleep with bottles of milk or juice. Decay commonly affects the upper front teeth first due to prolonged exposure to sugars.

Symptoms
  • White chalky spots near gum line

  • Pain or swelling from infection
  • Damage to spacing for permanent teeth

Prevention
